Work Experience Education

Work Experience Education (WEE) is a course open to seniors (or on occasion juniors who are 16+ who have a job or unpaid internship with an instructor-approved company. Working students must be paid using regular payroll or direct deposit and submit copies of their pay stubs regularly. Unpaid internship students must submit a weekly calendar showing the hours they trained and a description of the skills and competencies they used that week. The curriculum is designed to address employment and workplace issues you will encounter this year and beyond. WEE introduces students to the aspects, functions, and laws concerning employees in the workplace while focusing heavily on the "soft skills" that ALL workers need to succeed at work and in society.

  • Option 1: General Work Experience Educations (GWEE - paid employment)
  • Option 2: Exploratory Work Experience Education (EWEE - non-paid internships)

Grade Levels: 11-12
Graduation Credit: CTE/Applied Art

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE LOOK LIKE?

This course will be delivered in the Modern Classroom format, which means that much of it will have a suggested pace, as well as some choice in levels of assessments. Notes will be taken on posted videos, allowing for more 1-1 time with students during class. Modules and assignments/assessments will be released based on your completion of prior material. There will be clear expectations for the things you MUST do, SHOULD do, and ASPIRE to do. MUST do level assignments are required and serve as practice for the basic skills and knowledge needed to earn a passing grade in the class. SHOULD do and ASPIRE to do assignments address the things needed to be eligible to earn higher than a C. All assignments are color coded according to level. If you have a question, please ask!

GRADES

Grades are intended to reflect mastery of content, skills, engagement, and how well you are managing your responsibilities for Work Experience. Your job is to show how well you understand (master) the content and/or skills in each topic of study. Assessment grades are entered into Canvas as letter grades (defining your level of proficiency), not points earned on an assignment. Disregard any reference to “points” in Canvas as it is NOT reflective of how you have done on the actual assignment. Engagement grades may be entered as complete/incomplete, a point determination or a letter grade. Please look at assignments listed in Canvas carefully to see how they are being counted (assessments or engagement). See AR 5121 for CUHSD grade definitions.

There is no penalty for “late” work. While pacing is flexible, all work will only be accepted up until a communicated deadline near the end of the grading period, posted in Canvas. No work, including hours verification, will be accepted from the previous grading period. This is not flexible. Reassessments will be limited to mastery checks and will require a prior instructor meeting. There is no “extra credit.”

CREDITS EARNED FOR THIS COURSE

All students under 18 must have a valid work permit and have a job approved by Mrs. Chase. Copies of pay stubs will be submitted electronically via email directly to the instructor at [email protected] every time students are paid (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc...). This is how hours are calculated into semester credits. Unpaid students will submit weekly calendars of hours and task/skills descriptions. Please see the chart below for how credits are allocated. You must have a job or internship to stay enrolled in Work Experience. Students without a job have a limited time to get one before being dropped from the course and should meet with Mrs. Chase ASAP to discuss the timeline. Work hours start to be collected the first day of the semester or the first day the student attends the Work Experience Education class if they sign up after the semester begins. Students cannot combine GWE and EWE hours.
